The Internet has this to say about Haiku:
“The haiku is a Japanese verse in three lines. Line one has 5 syllables, line 2 has 7 syllables and line three has 5 syllables. Haiku is a mood poem. “
Perfect. I’m moody anyway. And the specs 5-7-5 were pretty straightforward, so I went for it. This was my first haiku:
I can count to five
add two, I count to seven
seven minus two
Five-Seven-Five, right? So all okay. I liked it, so I tried to be more traditional in tone and got this:
fragile the soft voice
harvest moon we weep in loss
no sun rise for us
And also…
the ocean my mind
wash winter from my living
grateful I can breathe
Then it turned into this other stuff:
sorry, the wet cat
drunken summer laundry night
there will be revenge
(It’s a long story…)
go right ahead, bub
morning bank robbers go first
it only seems fair
(Yes, this really happened.)
who spilled the coffee?
autumn needs a warm blanket
I need caffeine now
(Obvious: I always need coffee.)
tax collector faints
someone should call the doctor
maybe we don’t call?
(Not sure if I feel bad or good about this one – jury’s out.)
And this one didn’t go over well at the time, but it gave me something to think about while I waited for bail.
no thanks, officer
you cannot search my car now
call my lawyer please
So anyway, to answer the question: does business really need haiku? Need? Need is a strong word. But think of the possibilities:
toilet paper now
why guess? Charmin is the best!
cheaper in bulk – wow!
And finally, this one? This one just made me cry…
haiku rocks my soul
summer lives for rock n roll
the beer is all gone
***Okay, that’s all folks! ***
